One very common complaint that parents these days have is that their children aren’t eating healthy food. It’s a big issue when you look at the food kids ARE eating . . . chemical and fat laden junk. This article is not about hiding food from your child. It’s about helping them to realize the true value of healthy food. You might be surprised at how well your children take to new foods when you use the right techniques!

Even one heaping spoonful of green beans can be overwhelming to a small child. There’s no need to force your kids to eat a whole bowl of lima beans.

Make It Small

Kids love to have choices. Try placing several different foods in small muffin cups or in ramekins. When faced with an array of foods, kids will tend to test them.

Kids LOVE things like frozen peas and carrots and even green beans.

When In Doubt, Dip It

Oh, the joys of dip. Lay out the rules (no dessert unless each food item has been tasted, etc.) and then stick to them. The whole idea that you shouldn’t play with your food is ridiculous. Making healthy food fun will encourage your children to try new things.

Pick Kid-friendly Foods

Some foods are going to be more readily accepted by kids. Look at dried fruit as an alternative snack. For vegetables, stick to non-bitter ones . . . broccoli is often spurned by children because it is bitter, for example.

Make Eating Healthy Foods Fun

Children everywhere in the world have an on-going love affair with junk food such as hamburgers, pizza, candy, soda and salty foods like potato chips and french fries. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find a single child who has these same strong feeling for the healthy food that they need such as grains, vegetables, fruits and foods reach in nutrients such as meat, beans, fish and nuts.

(1) The Sneak Attack. Sure, some people don’t want their kids playing with food, but if it will help them get healthier, it may be worth the effort.

(2) Funny Name Game. Give the fruits and vegetables funny names and concoct elaborate stories.

(3) The Taste Test. Kids dislike vegetables because they don’t like the taste. Therefore, make the healthy foods taste better and your child will love them.
